Since its first appearance in 1974, the Golf has continued to evolve and dominate the compact car category worldwide. In 1986, the GTI 16V joined the second-generation Golf II range, which debuted in 1983. Powered by a 1,781cc inline-four engine with double overhead camshafts and 16 valves, this specially tuned car competed in world rallies, becoming the class champion in 1986.
